Authorities have issued a warning over potential danger to parts of MIMAROPA region as debris from China’s Long March 12 and Long March 3B rocket launches is expected to fall within Philippine territory this week.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) cautioned local governments and mariners in affected areas to take immediate safety precautions.
The Long March 12 rocket is set for launch from Hainan International Commercial Launch Center, with possible debris expected between November 30 and December 5.
Similarly, the Long March 3B rocket, to launch from Xichang Satellite Center, will drop remnants from December 1 to December 5.
Identified drop zones include coastal waters approximately 28 nautical miles from Rizal, Palawan, and near Quezon, Palawan, including Mindoro island, posing a direct risk to MIMAROPA region.
The advisory warns of toxic substances such as rocket fuel lingering in debris, which could harm residents and marine ecosystems.
Personnel protective equipment (PPE) is recommended for anyone encountering debris, while retrieval efforts are strictly discouraged.
“We are urging LGUs, fishermen, and maritime stakeholders to avoid these areas and report any sightings of debris to local authorities immediately,” the DILG said in an advisory released to the LGUs.
NDRRMC directives include issuing Coastal Navigational Warnings and Notices to Mariners to minimize risks during the specified dates.
The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) noted the potential hazards posed by remnants of China’s space missions and urged vigilance among affected communities in Mimaropa.
China’s ongoing rocket launches have previously alarmed neighboring areas, as falling debris has been reported in several countries.
The Philippine government has frequently called for international cooperation to address the risks of unregulated space activities.
Residents are reminded to maintain caution, stay updated on advisories, and avoid entering designated drop zones to ensure public safety.
