Road accidents in Oriental Mindoro have risen by 33% this year, prompting urgent Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) inquiries into highway safety.

Official data show 253 traffic incidents from January to August 2025, compared with 191 in the same period last year.

Provincial board member Atty. Roland Ruga, who chairs the transport committee, said committee hearings will focus on reckless driving, poor road conditions, inadequate signage and weak traffic enforcement.

Motorcycles are most often involved, with incidents peaking on Sunday evenings in urbanized areas.

The Department of Health has reported a steady rise in crashes in the country, with road accidents making up nearly a third of reported injuries in 2023.
