An Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) was shot and killed by an unidentified gunman in Barangay Maligaya, Gloria town on Sunday, police said.
Marilou Jarabe, 59, who worked in Italy, was drinking coffee at a waiting shed near her home when the suspect approached on a motorcycle around midday.
The gunman first bought soft drinks from a nearby store before walking up to Jarabe and saying “so it’s you” in Filipino, according to witnesses.
He then shot her in the back at close range.
The bullet passed through to her chest, causing fatal injuries.
Jarabe was rushed to Oriental Mindoro Central District Hospital but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
The suspect fled on a motorcycle without license plates immediately after the shooting.
Gloria Municipal Police Chief Major Honorato Baliente said investigators are reviewing closed-circuit television footage and gathering evidence to determine the motive behind the killing.
“We are continuing to collect CCTV footage and evidence to identify the perpetrator and establish the motive,” Baliente told reporters.
The victim had been working as an OFW in Italy before returning to her hometown in Gloria.
Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect and are appealing to witnesses to come forward with information that could lead to his arrest.
