A student-athlete from Occidental Mindoro State College died Saturday (April 26, 2025) after a boxing match at the ongoing State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association national games in Camiguin.
Marc Mateo Castillo, who represented the Southern Tagalog Region, collapsed following a referee-stopped contest in the third round against a competitor from the National Capital Region on April 26.
OMSC officials confirmed Castillo’s death in a statement released Sunday, saying the administration is “actively coordinating with concerned agencies and organizations, particularly the SCUAA and its associated committees overseeing the competition, to ensure a thorough review of the incident.”
College representatives have contacted Castillo’s family and are providing assistance with arrangements to return his remains home.
“The OMSC community conveys its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Castillo,” the statement reads. “The entire OMSC community shares in this period of mourning and stands in solidarity with those affected by this tragic loss.”
The college said it affirms its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its student-athletes while expressing pride in Castillo’s courage and dedication.
