Provincial authorities in Oriental Mindoro are set to launch a major anti-dengue drive on Friday as part of ongoing measures to combat the mosquito-borne disease that continues to affect thousands across the country annually.
The “DenGetOut” campaign will begin with a province-wide cleanup drive on March 21, 2025 starting at 7:00 a.m., aimed at eliminating mosquito breeding grounds in communities throughout the province.
Officials are encouraging residents to bring cleaning equipment including trash bags, brooms, dustpans, and gloves, while advising participants to wear comfortable clothing and hats for sun protection during the outdoor activities.
“Community cleanliness is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of diseases like dengue,” said the Provincial Health Office (PHO). “We cannot allow our homes and communities to become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.”
The Philippines reported over 217,000 dengue cases in 2023, according to data from the Department of Health, with the disease remaining a major public health menace throughout Southeast Asia.
Dengue fever is transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which breed in stagnant water often found in containers around homes and in poorly maintained public spaces.
Symptoms of dengue include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, and rash.
In severe cases, dengue can lead to hemorrhagic fever, which can be fatal if not properly treated.
The World Health Organization estimates that about half of the world’s population is now at risk from dengue, with cases increasing dramatically in recent decades due to factors including urbanization, population growth, and climate change.
Health authorities recommend that residents regularly clean water containers, dispose of items that can collect rainwater, and use mosquito nets and repellents as preventive measures against dengue infection.
