Provincial health officials in Oriental Mindoro have issued a public health advisory warning residents about dangerously high temperatures on Monday, March 10, 2025, as heat index values are expected to reach extreme levels.

The Provincial Health Office of Oriental Mindoro released Public Health Advisory No. 1 detailing the health risks associated with high heat index values, which combine temperature and humidity measurements to indicate how hot it actually feels to the human body.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), San Jose in Occidental Mindoro and Cuyo in Palawan will experience heat index values reaching 41ยฐC Monday, placing them in the “extreme caution” category.

Calapan in Oriental Mindoro is also listed among 50 areas expected to experience dangerous heat levels.

Health Officer Dr. Cielo Angela A. Ante warned that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to serious health complications, including heat exhaustion and potentially fatal heat stroke.

The advisory states that when body temperature reaches above 40ยฐC, immediate medical attention is required.

“The high heat index causes uncomfortable sensations in the body, especially for vulnerable individuals with preexisting health conditions,” the advisory stated in Filipino.

The provincial advisory outlines six major health effects of high heat index: uncomfortable body sensation, increased sweating without replenishment leading to dehydration, digestive system problems, rapid heartbeat with increased blood pressure, heat exhaustion with excessive sweating and dizziness, and heat stroke.

To mitigate these risks, health officials recommend drinking plenty of water while avoiding caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, staying out of direct sunlight during peak hours (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), wearing appropriate clothing, resting in cool shaded areas, using cooling devices such as electric fans and air conditioners, and seeking immediate medical attention if experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

The Department of Health advises the public nationwide to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and wear loose, lightweight clothing during this period of extreme heat.

The advisory concludes with a plea for Mindoreรฑos to be responsible and heed these warnings during the extreme heat.
