At least five people have been confirmed dead, including one in San Andres, Naujan, Oriental Mindoro, due to the effects of a shear line that brought heavy rains and flooding to Mimaropa region, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported.
The fatalities, which also included four from Palawan, were caused by drowning, with three passengers swept away by floodwaters in Barangay Inagawan, Puerto Princesa City, and another victim drowning in Barangay Bancao-Bancao in the same city.
The fifth fatality was reported in Oriental Mindoro.
According to the NDRRMC, Palawan remains the only province in the region with recorded evacuees, totaling 546 individuals.
Nearly 124,000 people across Mimaropa have been affected by the adverse weather conditions.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned of persistent rains over parts of the country, including Mindoro, due to the shear line.
PAGASA Weather Specialist Benison Estareja said the chances of rains remain high in the Visayas, Bicol Region, Caraga, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, and Davao Oriental until Monday.
Residents in flood-prone areas, including those in Mindoro, are advised to remain vigilant and follow evacuation protocols to ensure their safety.
The government urges the public to stay updated on weather advisories and cooperate with LGU authorities to minimize casualties and damage.
