The Bongabong Public Market has been awarded the grand prize in a regional search for the most consumer-friendly public market in Oriental Mindoro, distinguishing itself through both traditional excellence and digital innovation.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) MIMAROPA presented the prestigious “Pamilihang Bayan ng Bidang Mamimili (PBBM) 2024 Award” to Bongabong during a ceremony held in Calapan City on October 4, 2024.

A standout feature of the market’s modern approach is its online shopping platform (ePalengke), allowing consumers to purchase goods virtually – an advancement for a provincial public market.

The public market also offers free Wifi access for all buyers and sellers.

“This recognition reflects our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of service while embracing digital transformation for our community,” said Bongabong Mayor Elgin Malaluan, who attended the ceremony alongside market officials and local representatives.

The award ceremony, which coincided with Consumer Welfare Month celebrations, was attended by prominent regional officials including 2nd District Cong. Alfonso “PA” Umali and Calapan City Mayor Malou Morillo.

To showcase their achievements, the Local Government Unit of Bongabong, through the Market Administrator’s Office, produced a comprehensive video presentation highlighting their consumer-friendly initiatives and digital marketplace integration.

The video, created specifically for the PBBM Awards 2024, demonstrates the market’s commitment to modernizing traditional commerce.

Market Manager Erminaldo Dela Cruz, who oversees the facility’s operations with Deputy Manager Roger Mangua, accepted the award on behalf of the market administration.

The evaluation criteria included regular market inspections, price monitoring, consumer rights advocacy, and technological innovation.

Known as “The Organic Farming Capital of Oriental Mindoro,” Bongabong has demonstrated exceptional standards in market management and consumer protection, setting a benchmark for other municipalities in MIMAROPA region.

The successful implementation of online shopping capabilities particularly reflects the market’s forward-thinking approach to serving its community, showcasing the municipality’s dedication to both economic development and consumer protection while embracing digital solutions for modern market operations.

The recognition comes as part of DTI’s broader Consumer Welfare Month celebrations in October, promoting the theme “Serbisyong Higit pa sa Inaasahan” (Service Beyond Expectations).
