The Oriental Mindoro provincial government has passed an ordinance establishing Tourist Rest Areas and Souvenir Stops (TRASS) to support tourism development and enhance visitor experiences.

Provincial Ordinance No. 172-2024, approved on Sept. 10, is designed to create rest areas with amenities for tourists across the province.

The ordinance cites the Tourism Act of 2009 as mandating local governments to establish tourism assistance centers.

Major components of each TRASS site will include parking, a restaurant or cafe, souvenir shop, restrooms, agricultural product displays and lodging for motorists.

Initial TRASS locations are planned for Lumangbayan in San Teodoro, Batong Dalig in Socorro, Sagana in Bongabong and Cabalwa in Mansalay. Additional sites may be added later.

The provincial tourism office will oversee TRASS operations, with host municipalities providing support.

Community-based tourism groups can partner to sell local products at the sites.

Funding will come from the provincial tourism office’s annual budget, with potential support from the national government.

Provincial officials say the ordinance reaffirms their commitment to safe, comfortable travel experiences for visitors to Oriental Mindoro in line with national tourism goals.
