Several municipalities in Occidental Mindoro have suspended classes for Monday, September 16, 2024, due to heavy rainfall brought by the intensifying southwest monsoon.
According to an advisory released Sunday at 6:00 PM, all levels of classes are suspended in Mamburao, Santa Cruz, Calintaan, Rizal, San Jose and Magsaysay. The suspensions affect both public and private schools.
Other areas including Lubang, Looc, Paluan, Abra de Ilog and Sablayan have not announced any class suspensions as of Sunday evening.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued Weather Advisory No. 15 at 5:00 PM Sunday, forecasting heavy to intense rainfall (100-200 mm) in the northern portion of Occidental Mindoro through Monday afternoon. The advisory also warns of moderate to heavy rainfall (50-100 mm) in other parts of MIMAROPA region.
PAGASA cautioned that flooding and rain-induced landslides are likely, especially in areas highly susceptible to these hazards.
The Coast Guard Station Occidental Mindoro issued Sea Travel Advisory #03, suspending voyages of small crafts with 250 GT or less in the province.
The advisory cites gale warning signals indicating strong winds and very rough sea conditions in the area.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) has activated its 24-hour operations center.
