Recent laboratory tests on five pig samples from Barangay Talaotao, Looc have returned negative results for African Swine Fever (ASF), officials have announced.

The findings confirm the absence of the ASF virus in the tested samples, allowing Looc municipality to maintain its ASF-free status.

Consequently, quarantine restrictions on pigs previously imposed in the quarantine zone will be lifted effective immediately.

However, LGU officials stressed that existing restrictions implemented by barangay captains within their jurisdictions remain in effect.

LGU Looc strongly advised all stakeholders to continue reinforcing biosecurity measures to ensure the ongoing safety and health of livestock in the area.

ASF has hit hard in several towns in Occidental Mindoro.

The hog industry has reported economic losses in more than P150 million due to the outbreak.

African Swine Fever is a highly contagious and deadly viral disease affecting pigs and wild boars, with outbreaks leading to economic losses in the swine industry.

Looc, a coastal municipality located off the mainland province of Occidental Mindoro, covers the eastern half of Lubang Island and includes several smaller islands such as Ambil and Golo.

As of the 2020 census, Looc had a population of 7,802 people, revealing a substantial decline from 10,117 in 2015, marking a negative growth rate of 5.32%. (photo credit: Wikipedia)
