Retired Police Shot in Broad Daylight on Bansud Road; Police Hunt Suspect

A gunman shot and wounded a retired police officer in broad daylight Thursday on a road in Bansud town, Oriental Mindoro, prompting police to form a special team to hunt down the suspect.

Elmar Sumo was shot in the left shoulder around 7:30 a.m. Oct. 30, 2025 while riding in a Toyota Fortuner with his wife along NIA Road in Barangay Poblacion, according to Bansud Municipal Police Station.

The suspect approached the vehicle and opened fire, then continued shooting as the couple fled, police said.

Police Chief Maj. Clyde Kalyawen said PNP officers responded immediately and transported Sumo to Delos Reyes Hospital in Pinamalayan, where he is being treated.

Authorities have identified a suspect and formed a Special Investigation Team to investigate the attack and make an arrest, Kalyawen said.

“The suspect has been identified and we are doing everything to bring him to justice,” Kalyawen said. “We will not stop until we get the truth and deliver justice.”

Police urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information and asked residents to provide credible tips that could help solve the case.
