Oriental Mindoro province is among 14 areas placed under storm surge warning as Typhoon Opong threatens to bring dangerous coastal flooding across the Philippines within the next 48 hours, weather officials said.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued Storm Surge Warning #02 at 8:00 PM on Sept. 24, warning of moderate to high risk of inundation due to rising sea water and high waves in low-lying coastal villages.
Oriental Mindoro faces estimated storm surge heights of 1-2 meters, according to the weather bureau’s latest forecast.
The province joins 13 other areas under similar warnings as typhoon Opong intensifies.
Five provinces – Albay, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Northern Samar, and Sorsogon – face the highest threat level with projected surge heights of 2.1-3 meters, PAGASA said.
The complete list of areas under 1-2 meter storm surge warnings includes Albay, Batangas, Biliran, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Eastern Samar, Marinduque, Masbate, Northern Samar, Oriental Mindoro, Quezon, Romblon, Western Samar, and Sorsogon.
Weather officials urged residents in affected coastal communities to stay away from beaches, cancel all marine activities, and move to higher ground away from storm surge-prone areas.
“Be aware and follow the latest updates from PAGASA,” the agency advised, warning that inundation and flood depth would depend on local topography.
