Mindoro mayor’s son wins gold at shooting World Cup in Finland

A young shooter from Oriental Mindoro has claimed gold and two bronze medals at a world shooting championship in Finland.

Miguel Archangel Cruz, whose mother is Pola Mayor Jennifer Cruz, topped the junior division in the light air rifle event at the World Rimfire and Air Rifle Benchrest Federation World Cup.

The 28-country competition concluded on Saturday at the Ruutikangas Range in Oulu, Finland, after running for 10 days from August 6-16, 2025.

Miguel, son of Undersecretary Gilberto Cruz of the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission, also secured bronze medals in both light and heavy rimfire rifle categories.

The benchrest shooting championship tests precision marksmanship, with competitors using rimfire and air rifles fired from supported positions to achieve the tightest possible shot groups at fixed distances.

Cruz combined with Ronald Robles and Celedonio Tayao to earn a team bronze in the overalls category, contributing to the Philippines’ total haul of six medals – one gold and five bronzes.

The Philippine delegation was led by team manager Delia Quidato and coached by Maria Marcia Cleofas.

Other competitors included Jimmy Maniwang, Ramon Diaz Jr, Richard Cases, Jose Maria Esteban, Vincent Troy Monte, Rosinee Monte, Valentin Miguel Lopez and Rafael Cruz Jr.

The World Rimfire and Air Rifle Benchrest Federation organizes the premier global competitions for benchrest shooters using .22-calibre rimfire ammunition and air-powered rifles. Its world championships are held every two years.
