Heavy monsoon rains enhanced by Tropical Depression Dante have caused severe flooding across Occidental Mindoro province, forcing hundreds of families from their homes and disrupting essential services, according to the latest disaster management reports.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (PDRRMO) reported that 1,207 individuals from 303 families have been affected by the flooding as of Wednesday afternoon, with evacuation centers currently sheltering 811 individuals from 217 families.
The province has activated red alert status as of 12:00 PM Wednesday, indicating the highest level of emergency preparedness.
Three municipalities and six barangays have been officially designated as affected areas, with some communities no longer experiencing active flooding.
Emergency responders have distributed prepositioned food and non-food items to affected families.
However, the crisis has forced the suspension of classes at all educational levels and work across all municipalities in the province as authorities prioritize public safety.
The severe weather has impacted sea and air travel. Both Tilik Port and Caminawit Port have suspended operations, while San Jose Airport has cancelled all flights. Only Matabang Port in the Roro/Orange Navigation system remains operational for inter-island connections.
Critical infrastructure remains functional despite the volatile conditions.
Power supply, telecommunications, water systems, and road networks continue operating, providing stability during the emergency response.
Unlike other provinces affected by the enhanced southwest monsoon, Occidental Mindoro has reported no damage to agricultural sectors including rice, corn, high-value crops, fisheries, or livestock operations, according to disaster management officials.
The province has recorded no casualties, with zero deaths, injuries, missing persons reported.
However, 28 individuals have fallen ill due to flood-related conditions, while rescue operations remain ongoing.
Moreover, 396 individuals from 86 families are staying outside evacuation centers.
Weather forecasters warn that the combination of Tropical Depression Dante and the enhanced monsoon could bring continued rainfall to most parts of Luzon.
