Oriental Mindoro has recorded more than half a million tourist arrivals for the first time, showing an encouraging recovery in the country’s tourism sector.
The island province welcomed 529,745 visitors in 2024, representing a 19% increase from the previous year, according to TourLISTA data.
The figures show 442,156 domestic visitors and 87,589 foreign tourists chose to visit the province.
Oriental Mindoro has experienced dramatic growth since 2022, when it recorded just 233,953 arrivals.
The 2024 numbers represent a 126% increase over two years.
“This milestone demonstrates the province’s appeal to both domestic and international visitors,” tourism officials said.
The growth manifests revival of Philippines’ tourism industry following the Covid-19 pandemic, which severely disrupted travel across Southeast Asia.
International visitor numbers have shown particularly strong growth, rising from 11,294 in 2022 to 87,589 in 2024.
Oriental Mindoro’s proximity to Metro Manila has made it an attractive destination for domestic tourists, while its beaches, diving sites and cultural attractions draw international visitors.
The province is home to Puerto Galera, renowned for its diving spots, and offers mountain trails and sites showcasing the heritage of the Mangyan indigenous communities.
Tourism plays a vital role in the province’s economy, providing employment in hospitality, transportation and related services.
The Department of Tourism has implemented various programs to lure both domestic and international tourists as the country continues its post-pandemic recovery.
Local government units in Oriental Mindoro have been working on tourism promotions, implementing sustainable practices to preserve natural resources.
