President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has ordered a thorough investigation into dredging and reclamation activities nationwide, with particular focus on Occidental Mindoro, the Presidential Communications Office announced Wednesday.
The directive follows intelligence reports suggesting that sand from Philippine shores, including Mindoro coastal areas, is being used for China’s reclamation projects in the disputed West Philippine Sea.
“After receiving information about this matter, the President ordered a comprehensive investigation. The investigation is currently ongoing,” said Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro.
Castro pointed out that appropriate government action would immediately follow once investigation results are finalized.
When asked about potential liability of local government units involved in quarrying and dredging operations, Castro was unequivocal: “Those who should be held accountable must be held accountable.”
The National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA) is investigating Chinese companies operating in various parts of the country, including Manila Bay and reportedly Occidental Mindoro, where residents have long sought national government intervention.
Mindoro has been particularly affected by sand dredging operations in recent years.
Environmental advocates have expressed fears about coastal erosion, damage to marine ecosystems, and negative impacts on Mindoro’s fishing communities.
Several small-scale and large-scale dredging permits have been issued in the province despite residents’ opposition.
