The ALLUSIVE Galerean Youth Sailing Race Team from Puerto Galera has achieved what officials are calling an “outstanding achievement by any national or international standard” after completing a clean sweep of the 2025 BPI Season2 Series and claiming the National Championship in the cruising class.
The team, composed of youths from this coastal municipality in Oriental Mindoro province, secured an outright win in the final BPI Season2 2025 Subic Regatta, capping off previous victories in the Corregidor Cup, Busuanga Cup, and Boracay 200 events.
“This achievement follows-on from the previous three consecutive wins in the 2025 BPI Season2 Series, giving our ALLUSIVE Galerean Youth Sailing Race Team a full clean-sweep,” the municipality’s Public Information Office announced Friday.
The winning team includes Anthony Evangelista, known as “Captain Tabo,” Marvic Capit, Mark Glen Rucio, Logen Villiamo, Zyke Castillo, Jeffery Pancubit, Genmarck Maranan, Jonvic Velasquez, Trazzer De Paz, Warren Carpio, and Benjamin Diao Ariate, who serves as the ship’s engineer.
The program operates under Commodore Melanie Lagera in 2025, with several team members also serving in the Philippines Coast Guard Auxiliary under Commander Jose William N. Notario.
The team’s development has benefited from international expertise, including coaching from James Russel of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, current holders of the America’s Cup.
Municipal officials praised the victories as raising Puerto Galera’s profile in tourism and business sectors.
The team’s success has “been publicized in many media outlets around both the Philippines and the world,” under the World Sailing umbrella.
John Quirk, a long-term resident and community sponsor, coordinates and mentors the team with backing from the Ocean Adventure Club owned by Puerto Galera resident Louren de Guzman.
Quirk previously worked directly with Mayor Rocky D. Ilagan during the pandemic as “Foreigner Liaison.”
The BPI Signature Series, sponsored by BPI Private Wealth, ORCP, Subic Sailing, PHINSAF/PSA and other supporters including Broadwater Marine, has been credited with revitalizing competitive sailing in the Philippines on both national and international platforms.
