The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) conducted a swift medical evacuation of a foreign national at Sablayan Port in Occidental Mindoro on Saturday.
A 30-year-old Swiss tourist experiencing severe breathing difficulties was rescued after participating in a series of diving activities.
The incident unfolded rapidly, with PCG personnel responding to an urgent distress call.
Coast Guard Sub-Station Sablayan immediately mobilized a medical evacuation team, coordinating closely with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO).
Using a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB), the team quickly reached the patient and transported the Swiss tourist to Sablayan Port.
Medical personnel from MDRRMO conducted an initial assessment before transferring the patient to the District Hospital of Sablayan for further treatment.
Mindoro’s maritime history is punctuated by numerous medical evacuation incidents.
In June 2022, a similar emergency occurred when a German tourist suffered from decompression sickness near Puerto Galera, another popular diving destination in Oriental Mindoro.
A more severe incident in August 2023 saw the Coast Guard rescue a group of Australian divers after their boat experienced mechanical failure combined with a medical emergency approximately 20 nautical miles from Sablayan Port.
PCG authorities recommend that all marine tourists undergo comprehensive medical checks before diving; carry appropriate medical insurance; maintain clear communication channels with PH maritime authorities; and follow recommended diving safety guidelines.
