“Let this be a lesson.”
The Philippine Ports Authority’s general manager has said after the arrest of two fixers at Batangas Port who exploited passengers during the holiday season.
General Manager Jay Santiago condemned the activities of fixers who took advantage of travelers, saying “this should serve as a lesson” to those who engage in illegal activities.
The arrest of the two suspects, who charged passengers triple the usual fare, is a strong reminder that the PPA will not tolerate such exploitation, Santiago said.
Santiago said PPA has been proactive in addressing complaints, relocating the entrance gate at Batangas Port to avoid scammers offering insurance outside the port.
However, some fixers still managed to exploit passengers during the holiday rush.
The two arrested fixers were caught on Dec. 23, 2024, in a joint operation by the Philippine National Police Maritime Group, PPA Port Police, and Philippine Coast Guard-Batangas.
PPA clarified that the arrested fixers are not connected to any PPA employees.
As the investigation continues, the authority assures the public that it will persist in its efforts to prevent such illegal activities and ensure the safety and convenience of travelers.
Batangas Port is a crucial gateway for travelers heading to Mindoro and other nearby provinces, and its efficiency directly impacts the local economy.
