The Philippine Army has praised the local community in Oriental Mindoro for their role in helping to combat insurgency in the island.

According to Commander Cerilo Balaoro Jr. of the 2nd Infantry Division, the community’s active support has been instrumental in reporting the movements of New People’s Army (NPA) militants, leading to a recent clash in which one female NPA member was killed and two M16 rifles were recovered.

The incident occurred during a routine security operation, after concerned residents tipped off the army about the presence of NPA terrorists in the area.

Commander Balaoro pointed out the importance of local cooperation in achieving peace and security in the province.

“The people of Oriental Mindoro have been invaluable in our efforts to stamp out terrorism,” he said in a statement. “Their vigilance is crucial in our shared goal of achieving lasting peace and development.”

Commander Balaoro also expressed sympathy for the family of the fallen NPA member, saying that she had been misled into joining the armed struggle.

He urged residents to report any individuals who may have been injured in the clash, so that they can receive medical attention.

“We want to ensure that anyone who was hurt has the chance to recover and live a peaceful life with their loved ones,” he added.

One soldier was injured in the clash, but is now in stable condition and receiving medical care.

The Philippine Army has described NPA’s fatality as a huge blow to the NPA, and a clear message that the government is committed to ending the insurgency in the province.

The 2nd Infantry Division has vowed to continue working with the local community to achieve peace and security in Oriental Mindoro and the surrounding areas.

56th Anniversary
Today, December 26, 2024, the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) commemorates its 56th anniversary, with the Philippine Army describing the event as “generally peaceful on the ground”.

Despite the CPP’s call for its armed wing, the New People’s Army (NPA), to launch tactical offensives, no incidents were reported nationwide.

The Philippine Army has maintained a heightened state of alert, with internal security operations ongoing to ensure the safety of communities.

Army spokesperson Colonel Louie Dema-ala said troops remain vigilant, citing the need to protect citizens from potential attacks.

The CPP, which has been waging a decades-long insurgency, acknowledged “grave losses” in recent years but vowed to recover and advance the revolutionary resistance of the Filipino people. The party was established by Jose Maria Sison in 1968, with the NPA formed a year later.

The NPA’s strength has dramatically dwindled from its peak of around 25,000 fighters in 1987 to approximately 1,500 as of December 2023.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has also increased security measures, particularly in remote and isolated areas vulnerable to attacks.

Camp Crame officials said that police operations would continue uninterrupted during the CPP’s anniversary and the holiday season.
