Mindoro-Batangas Power Link to Channel Romblon Wind Energy by 2027

The upcoming power transmission project linking Mindoro to Batangas is set to unlock new renewable energy sources from Romblon province by 2027, following Alternergy Holdings Corporation’s acquisition of three offshore wind projects in Tablas.

The Batangas-Mindoro Interconnection Project will serve as a crucial power highway, enabling the transport of electricity from the Tablas offshore wind facilities to major load centers, Alternergy officials said Friday.

Alternergy Wind Holdings Corp., a subsidiary of the renewable energy firm, acquired Shell Overseas Investment B.V.’s interest in Tablas Strait Offshore Wind Power Corporation, which manages the three projects in Romblon province.

“Initial studies for the Tablas projects showed viability,” said Knud Hedeager, AWHC president. “With full control of the Tablas Projects, we are eager to proceed at an accelerated pace.”

The development aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration’s priority to expand offshore wind power in the country.

Alternergy aims to achieve 500 MW capacity by 2026.

Recent regulatory changes are expected to expedite the project’s development.

The Department of Energy (DOE) and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) signed an agreement last month streamlining environmental compliance certificates for offshore wind projects.

The Philippine Ports Authority is also upgrading port infrastructure, including facilities in Batangas, to support the offshore wind developments.

Alternergy indicated it plans to seek partnerships with third parties to complete the Tablas Projects, though specific details were not disclosed.
