3 Shot at LTO Checkpoint in Calapan City, Former Barangay Captain Dead

CALAPAN CITY – A routine vehicle checkpoint turned deadly Thursday morning (Nov. 7) when a motorcyclist opened fire on transportation officials and bystanders in Barangay Canubing 1, leaving three people wounded, including a former village chief who later died.

The shooting occurred between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. when Land Transportation Office (LTO) personnel attempted to stop a motorcyclist for document verification regarding his old motorcycle.

The rider, described as a well-built man, allegedly drew a firearm and began shooting after refusing to comply with the checkpoint requirements.

LTO officer Gerardo “Jerry” Garcia was shot in the lower chest and remains in critical condition at a Mindoro hospital.

Angeles Lopez Marasigan, 88, a former barangay captain of Canubing 1, was fatally wounded in the incident.

A third victim, Beraldo Dino, a mechanic from Joemar Motorcycle Shop and resident of San Andres Baco, sustained a non-life-threatening arm injury from what appeared to be a stray bullet.

According to witnesses, the incident began as a routine document check before escalating into an argument.

The suspect fled the scene, initially taking cover at a nearby refilling station before escaping.

The shooting occurred near MOGASS in Canubing 1.

Calapan City Police Station has launched a manhunt operation to apprehend the shooter.

Calapan PNP authorities are actively investigating the incident but have not yet released the identity of the suspect.

Marasigan’s death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from Calapan City, where she was well-known for her previous service as village chief.
