Police arrested two suspects for illegal logging at a checkpoint in Occidental Mindoro province, discovering illegal drugs during the inspection of confiscated timber, authorities said Monday.

The suspects, identified only by their aliases “Dindin” and “Del,” both 40, were initially stopped for violating Presidential Decree 705 (Revised Forestry Code) at a checkpoint in Poblacion 1, Sta Cruz municipality on October 27, 2024.

During the routine inspection of seized wood by Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) personnel, authorities discovered suspected illegal drugs weighing 7.055 grams, with an estimated street value of P45,300 pesos.

Both suspects, residents of Mamburao town in Occidental Mindoro, are now facing charges for violating both the anti-illegal logging law and Republic Act 9165 (Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002).

The operation was part of an intensified anti-crime campaign in Occidental Mindoro province, directed by Provincial Police Director Colonel Timoteo L. Espiritu Jr.

The suspects remain in custody at the Sta Cruz Municipal Police Station pending legal proceedings.
