Oriental and Occidental Mindoro provinces have suspended work and classes Thursday (October 24, 2024) as Tropical Storm Kristine continues to batter the country with heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Acting Oriental Mindoro Governor Rolando Ruga and Occidental Mindoro Gov. Ed Gadiano issued separate executive orders halting operations in government offices and educational institutions.
According to the Philippine weather bureau PAGASA, Kristine made landfall in Aurora Province late Wednesday evening.
The storm is forecast to move northwestward before turning westward, with the Mindoro provinces facing “minimal to minor threats” from strong winds and gale-force gusts.
“Flooding and rain-induced landslides are likely, especially in areas highly susceptible to these hazards,” warned Gadiano in his executive order.
Essential services will continue to operate in both provinces, including disaster response teams, hospitals, and emergency services.
Private businesses have been given discretion over their operations.
The suspensions come as part of precautionary measures to “protect people from the dangers brought about by Tropical Storm Kristine,” according to Ruga.
As of 5 a.m. October 24, Mindoro island is still placed under storm warning signal No. 1.
The country experiences an average of 20 tropical storms annually, making it one of the world’s most storm-exposed countries.
