Tropical Storm Kristine intensified Tuesday as it moved westward toward the Philippines, with forecasters warning of potential impacts on the Mimaropa region.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 for Marinduque and Romblon provinces in Mimaropa, indicating a threat of strong winds within 36 hours.

As of 4 a.m. Tuesday, Kristine was located 390 kilometers (242 miles) east of Virac, Catanduanes, with maximum sustained winds of 65 kph (40 mph) and gusts up to 80 kph (50 mph).

PAGASA said, “Strong to gale-force gusts are expected over Mimaropa, including Palawan and Romblon, starting tomorrow and continuing through Thursday.”

The weather agency warned of rough to very rough seas in coastal waters around the region, with waves up to 4.5 meters (15 feet) possible.

Small seacraft operators are advised not to venture out.

Kristine is forecast to strengthen further, potentially reaching severe tropical storm status before making landfall over Isabela province on Wednesday evening.

Local disaster risk reduction offices in Mimaropa have been advised to take necessary precautions to protect life and property.
