Lubang Island, Occidental Mindoro – The Municipality of Lubang is set to revolutionize its power infrastructure through a solar energy project, embracing a sustainable source to power the island.
The masterplan, part of the One Island Development Program spearheaded by Mayor Michael Lim Orayani, has gained traction following crucial meetings with national agencies.
A pivotal meeting took place at the New World Hotel in Makati City, bringing together representatives from the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and a solar power provider.
The gathering focused on Community Intervention Projects submitted to the DBM, with a special emphasis on presenting an alternative power source for Lubang Island.
Mayor Orayani presented the municipality’s vision for a sustainable energy future, discussing the financial and logistical aspects of implementing solar power infrastructure on the island.
In a separate meeting in Taguig City, the Philippine National Oil Company – Renewable Energy Corp. (PNOC-RE) expressed its commitment to the Lubang solar power initiative.
PNOC-RE has pledged to provide crucial technical assistance to Lubang, marking a major step forward in the project’s realization. This support is expected to expedite the commencement of the solar power installation, potentially transforming Lubang into a model for renewable energy adoption in island municipalities.
The solar power project is envisioned to reduce the island’s dependency on fossil fuels, lower electricity costs for residents and businesses, attract eco-friendly investments, create new job opportunities in the green energy sector, and enhance the island’s resilience against power outages.
“This project embodies our commitment to sustainable development and good governance,” Mayor Orayani said. “We’re not just bringing light to homes; we’re illuminating the path to a brighter future for all Lubang residents.”
