In a heartwarming story of perseverance and determination, a young Mindoreño student has overcome incredible odds to become a scholar of the prestigious Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) Program.

Ken L. Aquino, a 20-year-old student from Victoria, Oriental Mindoro, is the first DOST scholar from his barangay.

Despite coming from a disadvantaged family, Ken’s journey is a testament to the power of hard work, faith, and the opportunities provided by the DOST scholarship.

Growing up, Ken faced numerous challenges, including financial hardship and his mother’s battle with tuberculosis.

However, these difficulties only strengthened his resolve to pursue his dreams.

“I smiled, stayed optimistic, and used these experiences as fuel for my determination,” Ken said in an FB testimonial posted by the DOST.

Ken’s journey to becoming a DOST scholar began when he stumbled upon a DOST publication about the JLSS examination.

At first hesitant, he was inspired by a quote from Morris Pratt: “A moment of hesitation may cause you a lifetime of regrets.” This quote pushed him to overcome his doubts and pursue the scholarship.

Today, Ken is a proud DOST scholar, representing his province and pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at Mindoro State University.

The scholarship has not only alleviated the financial burden of his education but has also enabled him to focus on his studies without worrying about daily expenses.

The benefits of the scholarship have extended to Ken’s family, who were able to start a small business to sustain their daily needs.

His mother, who was previously struggling with tuberculosis, is now healthy and healed, thanks to the savings from Ken’s education costs.

Ken’s experience as a DOST scholar has also opened doors to new opportunities, including an International Summer Enrichment Program in Indonesia.

This experience has broadened his academic knowledge, expanded his cultural understanding, and strengthened his commitment to contributing positively to his community.

As a DOST scholar, Ken is determined to give back to his community.

He says he plans to organize community education workshops and seminars on topics such as agricultural technologies, computer-aided drafting, and programming.

He also intends to lead a community project focused on teaching farmers efficient agricultural practices, providing practical guidance on modern farming techniques, crop management, and resource optimization.
