Government authorities on Monday warned of potential flooding in Mindoro and other parts of the MIMAROPA region as tropical storm “Enteng” (international name: Yagi) approached the country’s eastern seaboard.
The state weather bureau PAGASA issued a general flood advisory at 6:00 am, stressing the risk to several major river systems in Oriental Mindoro province.
“Rivers and their tributaries particularly in Malaylay-Baco, Pulang-Tubig, Mag-asawang Tubig, Butas, Pula, Agsalin, Bansud, Sumagui, Bongabong, Baroc, Bulaacao and Balete are likely to be affected,” the advisory said.
PAGASA also warned of possible flooding in Occidental Mindoro, specifically mentioning rivers and tributaries in Mamburao, Ibod, and Bugsanga-Magbaban.
The storm, located 230 kilometers east of Daet, Camarines Norte at 3:00 am Sept. 2, is moving west-northwest at 10 km/h with maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h. It is expected to bring “moderate to occasionally heavy rains” to the region over the next 12 hours.
Other areas under flood watch include parts of Palawan province and Marinduque island, with numerous rivers and waterways at risk of overflowing.
Local disaster risk reduction and management councils have advised residents in low-lying areas and near mountain slopes to be on alert for possible flash floods and landslides.
The MIMAROPA region, comprising Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan, is particularly vulnerable to flooding during tropical storms due to its geography and numerous river systems.
Authorities urge residents to monitor official updates and follow evacuation orders if issued.
