Health officials on Thursday (August 29) reported the first case of mpox in the Calabarzon region, as the country remains vigilant following the World Health Organization’s declaration of the disease as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
The Department of Health-Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) for Calabarzon, which covers the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon, confirmed that a patient with no travel history tested positive for the virus.
Calabarzon (also known as Region IV-A) is located in the southwestern part of Luzon island. MIMAROPA, (also known as Region IV-B) consisting of the provinces of Mindoro (Oriental and Occidental), Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan, is situated southwest of Calabarzon.
These two regions were formerly part of a single region called Southern Tagalog (Region IV) before it was split in 2002. Their proximity and historical connection make them closely related in terms of geography and culture.
According to the Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit, the patient’s symptoms began on August 10, 2024, with fever and rashes.
The individual sought medical attention at a rural health unit and is currently recovering at home under close monitoring by local health authorities.
Mpox, caused by the MPXV virus, spreads through close contact with skin lesions, bodily fluids, or respiratory secretions of an infected person. It can also transmit through contaminated materials such as bedding or clothing.
DOH officials are urging the public to follow preventive measures, including practicing respiratory etiquette, frequent handwashing, and avoiding contact with infected individuals or those showing symptoms.
The DOH-CHD Calabarzon noted that mpox is treated with supportive care, focusing on managing symptoms and preventing secondary infections.
DOH officials also called on Filipinos to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases to their nearest health center or through the national patient hotline.
