The Philippines has detected a new case of monkeypox, the Department of Health (DOH) announced this week, marking the first infection reported in the country since December 2023.
The case was identified following intensified surveillance after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared monkeypox, now known as mpox, a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
All previous cases in the Philippines have been isolated, treated, and have recovered from the disease, the DOH said in a statement.
Health officials urged the public to protect themselves and their families against both the disease and misinformation.
The DOH released infographics, shared by the PIO of Oriental Mindoro, detailing transmission routes, symptoms, and preventive measures for mpox.
The advisory emphasized person-to-person transmission through direct contact with skin lesions or bodily fluids, as well as indirect contact with contaminated items.
Symptoms include skin rashes, fever, and muscle aches.
Recommended precautions include practicing respiratory etiquette, ensuring good ventilation, frequent handwashing, and avoiding contact with infected individuals.
The DOH advisory was part of the government’s “Bagong Pilipinas” (New Philippines) 8-point action agenda, aimed at improving public health responses and information dissemination.
