The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has installed a solar-powered water pump system at a waste management facility in Oriental Mindoro, as part of its efforts to promote sustainable practices and reduce energy costs.
The system, which was installed at the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) of the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Victoria, was demonstrated last week, and is expected to provide a reliable water supply for the facility’s operations, including waste recycling and irrigation for a community garden.
The project, which is part of the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology Program (CEST), aims to enhance the facility’s efficiency and sustainability, while also promoting environmental-friendly and energy-efficient practices.
“The solar-powered pump system is a significant advancement in our efforts to promote sustainable practices and reduce energy costs,” said a DOST official. “It not only benefits the waste management facility but also contributes to local food security and showcases a holistic approach to sustainability.”
The system is expected to reduce long-term energy costs and minimize carbon footprint, making it a model for community engagement and the adoption of innovative and sustainable practices.
