ABS-CBN Foundation Donates Coral Reef Monitoring Equipment to Naujan LGU

The municipal government of Naujan, Oriental Mindoro has recently received a donation of coral reef monitoring equipment from the ABS-CBN Foundation.

Municipal Administrator Stephanie Teves-Wong led the formal acceptance of the equipment, which includes:

  • One underwater camera with accessories
  • Four mobile phones for citizen scientists and local government use in mangrove monitoring
  • Buoys and ropes
  • Uniforms for citizen scientists
  • Snorkelling sets and dive fins
  • Books and handouts

Officials say the equipment will play a crucial role in ensuring continuous monitoring of marine activities. It will also facilitate ongoing data collection, providing essential context to support evidence-based strategies for sustainable and effective coastal and marine resource management.

The event was attended by key local officials, including:

  • Jessica Lacida, Planning Officer II from the Municipal Planning and Development Office
  • Chris Sean Paul Nagutom, Designated Fisheries Management Officer
  • Melvin Bacay, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer

Representatives from trained sea guardians known as “Bantay Dagat” and residents of Barangay Herrera were also present.

The donation was made possible through the efforts of ABS-CBN Foundation executives, including Project Manager Ellaine Diomampo, Bantay Kalikasan Program Manager Sara Agcaoili, and Managing Director Roberta Feliciano. Provincial Agriculturist Christine M. Pine also contributed to the initiative, along with other concerned agencies and individuals.

The company’s entry into news media is not surprising, as its founder and CEO, Romel “Direk” Bernardo, was a television writer, producer, and director for over 15 years. From 2002 to 2007, he served as a researcher, writer, and producer for GMA-7’s top-rating show Imbestigador before becoming the executive producer for ABS-CBN’s award-winning documentary program, The Correspondents.
