The National Electrification Administration (NEA) has given the green light for Oriental Mindoro Electric Cooperative Inc. (ORMECO) to start the bidding process for a 57-megawatt power supply project, a move aimed at addressing the province’s electricity shortage and high power costs.
In a letter dated July 23, 2024, NEA Administrator Antonio Mariano C. Almeda informed ORMECO that it could commence its Competitive Selection Process (CSP) for the Guaranteed Dependable Capacity (GDC) Power Supply project.
NEA also issued a Certificate of Conformity on July 29, 2024, confirming that ORMECO’s Invitation to Bid for lots 1-7 is consistent with the 2023-2032 Power Supply Procurement Plan. The certificate outlines a 15-year cooperation period for the project.
Oriental Mindoro Governor Humerlito Dolor welcomed the development, describing it as a “concrete and long-term solution” to the province’s power supply issues.
“The Notice to Commence we’ve been waiting for months has arrived from the National Electrification Administration, allowing ORMECO to begin the Competitive Selection Process or Bidding for the 57 Megawatts of power supply that will receive a subsidy (price reduction) from the National Government,” Dolor said in a Facebook post.
The governor noted that ORMECO and the provincial government are working together to find lasting solutions to the power problem.
The bidding process is expected to attract power suppliers who can provide the required capacity at competitive rates, potentially leading to more stable electricity supply and lower costs for consumers in Oriental Mindoro.
