The Mimaropa region, particularly Mindoro, is on high alert as two low pressure areas (LPAs) threaten to bring heavy rainfall and potential flooding to the area, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported Friday.

One LPA was located approximately 385 kilometers west-northwest of Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, as of 3:00 PM, July 19, 2024.

A second LPA was detected 865 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas, raising concerns about widespread weather disturbances across the central Philippines.

PAGASA forecasts cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms for Mimaropa and several other regions, including Metro Manila, Central Luzon, and parts of Visayas and Mindanao.

The weather agency attributes these conditions to the southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat.”

“Residents should be prepared for possible flash floods or landslides due to moderate to heavy rains,” a PAGASA meteorologist warned.

The western section of Luzon, which includes Mindoro, can expect moderate to strong winds from the southwest to southeast, resulting in moderate to rough coastal waters with wave heights ranging from 1.5 to 3.1 meters.

Local disaster management offices in Mindoro and neighboring provinces have been placed on standby, with emergency response teams ready to assist in case of weather-related incidents.

Temperature extremes in the past 24 hours ranged from a low of 25.7°C to a high of 33.6°C, with relative humidity fluctuating between 58% and 95%.

As the monsoon season intensifies, authorities urge the public to stay informed about weather updates and follow safety guidelines. Farmers and fishermen in the affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions.

PAGASA continues to monitor both LPAs closely, with further updates expected as the weather systems develop.
