Mindoro residents have long been dealing with the inconvenience of daily power outages, relying on diesel and bunker-fed generators for electricity. While the island awaits the completion of an undersea interconnection cable to the mainland Luzon grid by 2027 or 2028, there’s a glimmer of hope on the horizon.
A groundbreaking offshore wind farm project is set to rise off the coast of Bulalacao, the southernmost town of Mindoro. Spearheaded by Cleantech Global Renewables, Inc., in partnership with The Blue Circle, this project will cover approximately 40,095 hectares with floating and bottom-fixed wind turbines.
This initiative promises a minimal environmental footprint while harnessing Mindoro’s abundant wind energy potential.
Aboy Castro, CEO of Cleantech Global Renewables, Inc., expressed his enthusiasm: “The Bulalacao offshore project is a major stepping stone towards our country’s sustainable development and energy independence. We’re committed to adopting new technologies and best practices to expand our renewable energy assets.”
The Blue Circle, a leading renewable energy company in Southeast Asia, will bring its expertise in developing sustainable projects across challenging geographies in the Asia-Pacific region. With a strong presence in cities like Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok, Manila, and Phnom Penh, The Blue Circle is dedicated to creating responsible and sustainable energy solutions.
Though the wind farm is set to be operational by 2033, it represents a significant leap towards a greener and more reliable energy future for Mindoro. This project offers hope for sustainable development, ensuring that Mindoro’s energy needs will be met with clean, renewable power in the years to come.
