In a powerful demonstration of the ongoing fight against drug abuse and trafficking, the Oriental Mindoro Rehabilitation and Recovery Center (OMRRC) was awarded a plaque of recognition for its contributions to community-based drug recovery programs.

The honor came during an event marking the International Day against Drug Abuse and Trafficking (IDADAIT) on June 28, 2024.

The ceremony, held at The Loft in Ateneo de Manila University’s Arete Building, was organized by the USAID RenewHealth Project. It served as both a celebration of progress and a bittersweet farewell, as the project wraps up nearly five years of dedicated assistance to national and local government partners in the Philippines.

Princess Patricia Mhey Dolor, Mental Health Coordinator of OMRRC, accepted the award alongside the office’s psychologist, Jessa Leviste.

The recognition highlights OMRRC’s pivotal role in the “Oplan Tokhang” Program, which aims to reach, screen, and treat individuals struggling with substance use disorders.

“This award represents the tireless efforts of our entire team and the community we serve,” Dolor said during the awarding program. “It’s a testament to the power of local action in addressing the complex challenges of drug abuse and rehabilitation.”

The event underscored the theme “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention,” emphasizing the critical importance of proactive measures in combating drug abuse. It also showcased the success of the USAID RenewHealth project in supporting the Department of Health’s 8-point agenda for drug abuse prevention and treatment.

Oriental Mindoro Governor Humerlito “Bonz” Dolor, who has been a staunch supporter of healthcare initiatives in the province, expressed his pride in the OMRRC’s achievement.

“This recognition reaffirms our commitment to creating a drug-free community and ensuring that those affected by substance use disorders receive the care and support they need,” the Governor stated.

As the USAID RenewHealth project concludes its operations in the Philippines, there’s a strong focus on sustainability.

Project leaders expressed confidence that local government units (LGUs) and partner agencies will continue the vital work of drug abuse prevention and treatment.

The success of programs like those implemented by OMRRC offers a glimmer of hope in the ongoing battle against drug abuse and trafficking in the Philippines. It demonstrates that with dedicated effort, community involvement, and evidence-based approaches, progress is possible.

ABOUT USAID RENEWHEALTH PROJECT
The USAID RenewHealth Project in the Philippines is a development initiative funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The project has been operating for almost 5 years in the Philippines.

It aims to strengthen efforts in reaching, screening, and treating persons who use drugs, and to institutionalize Community-Based Drug Recovery (CBDR) programs.

The project works with both National Government Partners and Local Government Units (LGUs) in the Philippines.

It has successfully supported the 8-point agenda of the Department of Health in the Philippines.

The project’s primary objectives include eradicating drug abuse and trafficking in the country. It emphasizes community-based solutions and evidence-based practices in drug recovery and prevention.
